There are some basics to negotiating your salary successfully. They're actually not that complicated and, many times, they come down to emotional responses vs any secret technique. Most people of all levels leave money on the table when they are negotiating and many don't negotiate at all. You literally have nothing to lose by negotiating so why are you so scared?
One key thing to remember is that, almost every time, the person on the other end is just as scared to negotiate. We are programmed to avoid confrontation and these conversations can feel uncomfortable. Once you learn to use that to you advantage you have a distinct leg up to get more money.
That being said, you don't want to over-negotiate. You'll almost always lose by choosing a number that is astronomical.
